Insurance Information

When applying for a Schengen visa, health insurance must meet the following criteria:

  • must be issued in the EU (health insurance issued in Russia is not accepted);
  • the surname and name of the insured person are indicated;
  • the period of insurance is indicated (the minimum period is the period of the planned trip);
  • the number of insured days during the trip (the minimum number is the number of days of the planned trip);
  • territory of insurance - the whole world or countries of the Schengen agreement;
  • the minimum amount of medical expenses and repatriation expenses, including the risk of death - 30,000 euros;
  • if the applicant participates in sport activities while traveling, health insurance must also cover this.

Travel health insurance policies do not meet insurance coverage requirements for planned long stays in Germany.

Medical insurance requirements for applying for a national visa for students with admission to study:

Applicants under 30 years of age:

  • can apply for state insurance (registration is possible only after registration at the place of residence in Germany)

For the first time you need:

  • travel insurance "Incoming-Versicherung"

OR

  • travel insurance issued in the EU with an extended period of validity

Applicants over 30 years old, or after the 14th semester of study:

  • cannot qualify for public insurance and must take out health insurance from private insurance companies for the entire period of study
  • travel insurance does not meet the required requirements

Please note that it is compulsory to provide a health insurance policy when enrolling in a German higher education institution or pre-university training college.

Before starting your studies, you should consult the student support organization (Studentenwerk) or the International Office for health insurance at your institution.

Medical insurance requirements for applying for a national visa for internship, as well as for language courses:

  • travel insurance issued in the EU, covering the entire period of stay as part of the internship / language courses

OR

  • insurance for visitors "Incoming-Versicherung"

Since, in the case of a stay longer than 90 days, the travel health insurance policy may exclude the insurance coverage of certain insurance conditions, it is recommended to conclude health insurance for foreign nationals entering the country (the so-called "Incoming-Versicherung").

Medical insurance requirements for applying for a national visa for the purpose of employment and their family members:

  • travel insurance issued in the EU, covering the entire period of stay until registration at the place of residence in Germany and until the start of the employment contract

Health insurance requirements for applying for a national visa for the purpose of family reunification:

  • travel insurance issued in the EU, covering the entire period until the start of family insurance

OR

  • travel insurance "Incoming-Versicherung"

Since in the case of a stay longer than 90 days, a travel health insurance policy may exclude the coverage of certain insurance conditions, it is recommended to take out health insurance for foreign citizens entering the country (the so-called "Incoming-Versicherung").

In the case of reunification of other family members under special circumstances, it is necessary to provide evidence of private health insurance for a long-term stay in Germany. Medical insurance policies for those traveling abroad are not sufficient in this sense.

A health insurance policy can be provided upon receipt of a visa.
