Information for entering Germany for people from Ukraine

I worry about my friends and relatives. Can Ukrainian citizens enter Germany at the moment?

All persons, regardless of whether they are citizens of Ukraine or other countries who were in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, can enter and stay in Germany without a visa.

Citizens of Ukraine with a biometric passport still had the opportunity to enter Germany without a visa before. Now citizens of Ukraine without a biometric passport also have the right to visa-free entry to Germany and stay there. This also applies to those cases when they were temporarily outside Ukraine on February 24, 2022, but had a permanent residence before February 24, 2022 or were mostly on the territory of Ukraine.

This also applies to refugees recognized in Ukraine in accordance with the Geneva Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, as well as to persons who are in Ukraine under international or equivalent national protection.

If necessary, after entering, you can contact the Office of Foreign Citizens and apply for a residence permit.

These provisions are currently in force until 23.05.2022.

 

How long can Ukrainian citizens stay without a visa on the territory of the Schengen countries? Can they apply for asylum in Germany?

For temporary stay without employment, citizens of Ukraine have the right to enter Germany without prior visa.

The European Union, together with EU member states, has prepared for the reception of refugees from Ukraine. According to the so-called Temporary Protection Directive (2001/55 / EG), this will be done in a non-bureaucratic manner. In particular, this means that refugees from Ukraine do not need to go through a lengthy asylum procedure.

Refugees from Ukraine who are in Germany have the legal right to apply for asylum. This possibility remains. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BaMF) checks each case for preconditions for protection.

Given the current situation, citizens of Ukraine and third-country nationals residing in Ukraine, as an exception, may apply for a German visa also in the German missions in neighboring countries. The same applies to citizens of Ukraine without a biometric passport.
